You can be stuck on the astral for a very long time. Many souls end up with Seth. He carries them to the underground.
Those who are left often are shown a way or they are stuck or they reincarnate soon.
Lower dimensions and realms are where many souls fall then they die, their souls and bodies are detoriating slowly usually or because of some accident all bodies can be severely damaged. Bodies I mean inside of you are more bodies, made of energy. When you damage those, many weird things can happen. You can instantly end up on most lowest realms, lose contact with the living, or you can still stay close to material. Some might see you, depending on what has happened. Sometimes it can happen that you don't even know that you are dead. But others might or might not notice.
You might just disapear as well, just like that, in several minutes.
You could lose all the ability to contact the material.
You could regret things a lot, many, you could be asking for help of the Gods to find your way out and reincarnate again. You could be okay and see it all as well btw. There are chances you could just be confused about it all, but often people are aware that something is odd.
Underworld is actually a nice place where Seth is taking souls to rest and prepare to reincarnate or to be revived. Osiris and some can take care of them and help them to navigate themselves though lower dimensions and underworld. Through the astral overall. Astral can be confusing for some but in time it can become better, you have to try to understand how this works. If you want you can ask Seth or someone who rules the Underworld to show you how it looks. I have seen it and is actually looking nice. There is no hellfire or similar crap as some have said, that is xian invention, things like that don't really exist.
Hell basically can mean lower realms, but can mean also lower chakras serpent's energy. It can mean base chakra energies. Usually from what I have seen it represents lower realms.

You can think of death as something kinda normal but it is not an escape for those who are suicidal, at least in most cases. I admit sometimes it is easier, the way out of some negative situations, but this whole thing there on the astral, on lower realms can last. It can last for a long time, especially if someone is guarding you there. Some souls can be there for many many years.
I used to think that death is just a phase. But death can be something that can be just a thing where soul is waiting to have that one or more extra bodies so it can be where all others are, on that one specific vibration a bit more.
