Sorry miss Zola; I wasn't able to write a story about how I got into JoS (and how I left it behind), after all. It brought back too many horrible memories and I couldn't continue.
That said, it's very clear they're a cult. A common argument I've heard against that is that since most communication happens on a public online forum, it couldn't be a cult. However, all posts are invisible until manually approved by staff, which makes it prone to censorship and easy for higher-ups to control the narrative. So it's not as open as it initially seems, and ultimately has many similarities to other cults, especially with the new donation model. The "public forum" defense just doesn't hold ground nowadays.
The Joy of Satan promised things like immortality and vengeance, while also presenting a "greater purpose." This drew in many desperate people suffering from existential dread or facing injustice. Once they're hooked, there's opportunity to groom them for various purposes, which are only revealed later. That's how they exploit the vulnerable.
The spiritual info available on their website is largely just Hindu meditations (and yoga) altered for demonolatry, and a bit of self-hypnosis. In my experience, it works well. Their website is one of the things that inspired me to learn tantra too, which has been greatly helpful to me; I picked up the basics from their Ascending Energy Meditation page, and learned the rest from a spirit and intuitively. But that's how they get people: mixing in a bit of truth with the lies. Otherwise people would lose interest and leave.
I hate it. Perhaps that's why I mostly work with Lilith now; she specifically is all about opposing any sort of tyranny.
It still hurts sometimes to think back to what happened, but what matters the most is that I'm okay now. My future is my own, and I'm free.
